Driving Test There are two parts to obtaining a full licence.
The Theory Test - 2 Parts: 1st Part: Multiple choice of 50 questions, you must obtain 43 or more correct answers to pass this section. 2nd Part: Hazard Perception, 14 video clips lasting approximately 1 minute. By clicking a computer mouse button you must identify a developing hazard. You need to score at least 44 to pass this section. You must pass both parts of this theory test (in one sitting) before applying to take a practical test. Don't forget to take your licence to the theory test centre!
The Practical Test - as of December 4 2017 On the day of your test the examiner will ask to see your licence, ie the photocard, and may ask to see your theory certificate.
After signing the examiners marking sheet you will be required to read a number plate at 20.5 meters. (If you need spectacles or contact lenses to do this, that's fine).
You must then attempt to answer a 'tell me' question at the test centre, and a 'show me' whilst on the move (safety aspects of car controls / maintenance) from a bank of questions. For example, tell me how you would check your tyre pressures and show me how you would operate the rear demist control. A full list of these questions can be found on the DVSA website.
You will then drive for approximately 38 to 40 minutes on a selected route and be asked to carry out one from four possible manoeuvres.
The manoeuvres are:
1. Reverse into a parking bay safely and finish within the lines.
2. Pull forwards into a parking bay, finishing correctly and then reverse out from that bay into the main car park safely.
3. Park on the right hand side of the street facing traffic. Then reverse two car lengths. Then rejoin the traffic safely.
4. Reverse parallel park safely behind a car.
You may also be asked to perform a controlled (emergency) stop.
There is a section of the test where you will be asked to drive independently for about twenty minutes. This involves following a satnav route (4 out of 5 candidates), or following place names on signs as directed by the examiner (1 out of 5 candidates). The idea of this section is to check whether you can maintain a safe drive whilst attempting to follow the satnav or signs. If you navigate wrongly, you can still pass, as long as you have gone wrong safely. It's worth remembering though that the route suggested by the examiner will be better than going somewhere different.
To pass you must not make any serious or dangerous faults and obtain no more than 15 driving errors.
